Who Expert is for — and who it is not

Choose Expert if you are comfortable maintaining full candidate notes and you recognize pairs. Skip it if Hard still requires several hints; Expert will feel opaque rather than educational.

These puzzles are still classical Sudoku: 9×9, digits 1–9, unique solution. There is no extra rule set. The difficulty comes only from how few cells are given at the start (typically the low twenties).

How generation stays fair

Expert generation runs in a background worker so the page stays responsive while the solver confirms uniqueness. You may see a short loading state; that wait is the engine discarding invalid grids, not a frozen tab.

Because uniqueness is required, trial-and-error is unnecessary. If two branches both seem possible, a candidate is missing or an earlier digit is wrong. Use the mistake highlight and notes rather than filling at random.

Print Expert grids

An Expert printout is a long-form paper challenge. Print Puzzle as soon as the grid appears so you are not racing the on-screen timer. Bring a pencil; you will need candidate marks that the printout does not copy from the browser.

Expert-level tips

• Build complete notes in one box before jumping around the grid.
• Look for locked candidates: if a digit in a box lives only in one row, eliminate it from the rest of that row.
• Stop when notes contradict; undo the last placement instead of stacking more guesses.

Does Expert use a different Sudoku variant?

No. Expert uses the same 9×9 rules as Easy. Only the number of starting clues is lower, so more of the work sits in candidate logic.

Why does Expert take longer to generate?

The generator must prove the puzzle has exactly one solution. Sparse grids fail that test often, so the worker retries until it finds a valid Expert puzzle.
